How can technology help us rapidly and accurately gather and analyse stress, pests and disease data in trees and wild plants to aid early detection at national levels?

2ExcelAviation

The solution

Rapid detection of dead, dying, and gingering individual trees (particularly conifers) using aerial photography to support quick identification and response to key and statutory pests and pathogens. Additional detailed assessment of individual tree canopy stress using hyperspectral imagery to support early detection and monitoring of new pest and pathogen outbreaks.

The Opportunity

This CivTech Challenge has presented the opportunity for 2Excel to test and develop their existing approaches for tree health and fall risk management in critical infrastructure. The company will further develop these solutions to provide new landscape-scale mapping and monitoring applications in the environmental management sector.

Next Steps

Development of the Tree Pest and Pathogen Map focusing on specific tree species and symptom expressions. The initial development will focus on three pests and pathogens of pine (Dendrolimus pini, Curreya pithyophila and Dothistroma septosporum) specifically in the Caledonian Pine environment.

The Team

The 2Excel Geo team has grown to deliver end-to-end remote sensing solutions from data capture to data delivery. The team of specialists has particular expertise in the acquisition and processing of hyperspectral imagery to support environmental applications, with a domain focus on forestry, ecology, and environmental management.
